Terms of Use
In short: Tail End Charlie is a development-stage companion app for group motorcycle rides. It is not an emergency service and is not a substitute for safe riding, road awareness, or your own judgement. Location, navigation, and relay features can be delayed, inaccurate, or unavailable, and you use the app at your own risk. Nothing here limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, or anything else the law doesn't allow us to limit.
Alpha notice: Tail End Charlie is in active development. As we add and change features, these terms should be treated as preliminary and are likely to be updated frequently during this stage. We'll keep them accurate as the app evolves.
Acceptance of these terms
By downloading, installing, or using Tail End Charlie, including the website ride planner, you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the app or planner.
About the service
Tail End Charlie helps a group of riders share a route, hand off a second-bike drop-off marker, and see each other's position and status during a ride, including through a local device-to-device relay when mobile coverage is unavailable.
The website ride planner lets you choose stops, request a road-following route, create a temporary code for loading or reopening it, and download a GPX file for import into the app or another compatible navigation tool. Anyone with a route code or emailed route link can access that shared route until it expires, so you are responsible for sharing it only with people you trust.
Optional motorcycle discovery layers show community or open-data road highlights and destinations. These are descriptive planning aids, not safety endorsements or instructions to ride at a particular speed. Roads may be restricted, closed, damaged or unsuitable, so you must check current signs, access, weather and conditions yourself. Suggestions are reviewed before publication and must not be copied from proprietary maps, route collections or guidebooks without permission that allows reuse.
The app is currently in active development and controlled testing. It is not a certified emergency-coordination tool, and it should not be relied on as the sole way to stay safe, stay together, or reach help in an emergency. Always carry an independent way to call for help, and follow the rules of the road above anything shown in the app.
Eligibility
You must be old enough to hold a valid licence to ride the vehicle you intend to use with the app in your jurisdiction, and the app is not directed at or intended for use by children under 16.
Ride codes and access
The app doesn't use user accounts or sign-in. Access to a ride is controlled by a six-digit ride code you create or are given. You are responsible for who you share a ride code with, since anyone with a valid, unexpired code can join that ride.
Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Use the app in any way that breaks the law, endangers others, or encourages unsafe riding;
- Attempt to bypass, guess, or brute-force ride codes, or otherwise try to access a ride you haven't been invited to;
- Attempt to disrupt, overload, or gain unauthorised access to the relay service or other riders' devices;
- Use false emergency-stop alerts or hazard reports, given other riders may rely on them.
Your responsibility as a rider
Motorcycling carries an inherent risk of serious injury or death, independent of anything this app does or doesn't do. You are solely responsible for riding within your ability, complying with traffic laws, and making your own real-time judgement about the road ahead. The app is a coordination aid between riders and does not replace rider training, situational awareness, or safe following distances.
Service availability and accuracy
GPS position, navigation guidance, route-deviation detection, hazard alerts, and the local device-to-device relay all depend on device hardware, satellite visibility, mobile network coverage, and, for online rides, our relay server — all of which can be delayed, inaccurate, or temporarily unavailable. We don't guarantee the service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that any alert will reach every rider in time.
Optional speed-limit readings come from mapped OpenStreetMap road data, not a live traffic-regulation feed. They can be missing, out of date, matched to the wrong road, or differ from temporary, variable, signed, and vehicle-specific limits. They never replace roadside signs, and you remain responsible for observing the legally applicable limit.
Third-party services
The app and website ride planner use the OpenStreetMap Foundation's public Nominatim service for destination search and the public Project OSRM service for routing by default. Optional route constraints and mapped speed-limit lookups use a public or configured Valhalla service. The website loads map styles and tiles from OpenFreeMap. These services are operated independently of us, and we're not responsible for their availability or accuracy.
Intellectual property
Tail End Charlie's source code is published at GitHub under the PolyForm Noncommercial License 1.0.0. The Tail End Charlie name and logo are not covered by that licence.
Disclaimers
To the fullest extent the law allows, the app is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including as to merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement.
Limitation of liability
Nothing in these terms excludes or limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else the law does not allow us to exclude or limit. Subject to that, to the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect or consequential loss, or for loss of data, arising from your use of the app, and the app is provided free of charge with no guarantee of any particular level of service.
Changes to the service
Because the app is in active development, features, reliability, and availability can change, and we may suspend or withdraw the service, in whole or in part, at any time, including without notice during this testing phase.
Ending your use
You can stop using the app at any time by deleting it. We may suspend or end your access if we reasonably believe you've broken these terms.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms as the app changes. We'll update the effective date above when we do.
Governing law and jurisdiction
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute arising from them, without prejudice to any mandatory consumer protections in your country of residence.
